Police: Footprints in snow lead officers to robber, stolen goods

Officers arrested a Madison man after following footprints in the snow to a neighborhood about a half a mile from a retailer that was robbed Thursday, according to police.

The Fitchburg Police Department said a man robbed the Radio Shack at 3040 Fish Hatchery Road in the morning. An employee told police a lone subject came into the store, displayed a handgun and demanded property. The robber then fled the scene.

Officers were able to follow footprints from Radio Shack to the 2900 block of Traceway Drive, about a half a mile away. Police said investigators obtained a possible suspect's name and officers located him in the Traceway Drive area, where he lives.

Officers found a handgun and stolen property in a nearby dumpster, according to the report.

Robert Avery, 21, was taken into custody on a probation violation, Fitchburg police said. More charges against Avery are expected, according to the report.

Police said officers are not looking for any additional suspects in the robbery.
